Tips on Growing Ivy as Houseplant

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

In spite of the vast number of plants which are much more attractive in appearance a surprising number of green-leaved ivies still retain their popularity. The fact that there are so many other colourful plants on the market is in all probability a very good reason for the continued appeal of the green varieties, as they are useful for toning down the colouring when planted arrangements are being prepared. H. Chicago has simple-shaped green leaves with no frills whatsoever. Green Ripple has slightly larger green leaves with prominent veins which are the main attraction.

A cool, lightly shaded position in the room or garden room is ideal, with compost which is, if anything, inclined to he on the dry side. Stuffy conditions are also detrimental so, in warmer rooms, the windows ought to he opened occasionally to allow the circulation of fresh air.

Ivies may he used for almost every purpose, as trailing plants, upright plants on stakes, climbing plants against the wall or, very effectively, as hanging basket plants. In this respect they may he used in conjunction with other plants, or as individual specimens filling the basket.

Anthurium

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Besides producing new shoots in this way the variegated pineapple will also develop one or more strong growths from among the leaves of the parent rosette. These make by far the best plants in the end, and should be left to make at least six strong leaves before being removed with a sharp knife, cutting close to the parent plant.

It is also helpful if plant pots are plunged to their rims in peat or moss beds, below which there should be permanently warm pipes, or soil-warming cables can be run through the bed. In common with most members of the aroid family this anthurium will develop aerial roots on the main steirk as it extends in, length. If these are left unattended to dry out in the atmosphere then the plant will suffer.

To encourage these roots to provide nourishment. Wrap a good thick layer of fertiliser-soaked moss around the stem. Into this the mots will penetrate and improve the plant considerably. At most only three or four flowers are produced each year (you may well say, ‘After all that bother’), but the spathes will compensate for their scarcity by remaining colourful for two months or more. Even when cuf and placed in water they will give anything from four to six weeks of pleasure.

Get Gardening Supplies

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

When you want to start a garden, you need the right supplies. Don’t start digging up your yard unless you are sure you have the right tools. You’ll end up with a mess of a yard and a lot to clean up if you aren’t prepared.

In order to figure out what you need, go through the steps of the gardening process and figure out what is necessary for each step. First, you need to cultivate the plot and prepare the soil. In order to do this, you will need a tiller. A tiller is motorized and easily breaks up the ground before you. They are very efficient and easy to use, but can be expensive.

If you dont have the budget for a till, you can replace it with several tools. Of course, you will need a shovel for the initial digging. If you have especially tough, rocky land, you may need a pickax to help you with the initial digging. Once youve broken up most of the dirt and removed the tough grass on top, a garden hoe will be necessary to further break up the soil.

Hydrangea

There have been many hybrids of Hibiscus rosasinensis produced in recent years, many of them really excellent plants that ought to become popular as they become more generally available. There are single and double forms in shades of red, pink, lemon and yellow. Individual flowers last for little more than one day and this, to some, is a disappointment when plants are first purchased. But the disappointment is soon forgotten when it is realised that what flowers may lack in staying power they more than make up for in numbers, as on healthy plants flowers are produced continuously throughout the summer.

Plants are available in shades of pink, white and blue, and often in less definable shades of mauve. The latter colour is usually the result of the nurseryman having misfired in his treatment of the plant with the chemical alum, which is used to change the colour of pink varieties from their natural pink colouring to blue. If the blueing treatment is not continued each year the plant will slowly revert to its normal pink colour.

The simplest way to increase plants is to peg shoots into small pots in the form of a layer, cutting them away from the parent plant when they become established.

Clianthus

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Not a plant for the beginner, but a most rewarding exotic plant for the. person who can provide the correct conditions and the extra bit of care that is wanted. To mention a few of the common names will give an indication of how exotic it is: glory pea, parrot’s bill, red kowhai and lobster’s claw. Again, they are multi-purpose plants which may be planted in the border in the garden room, grown in pots, or used in hanging baskets, where they are even more impressive as one can see the exciting flowers much better than when they are in pots or against a wall.

Plants may be raised from seed sown in warm conditions, or from cuttings of side shoots inserted in a warm propagator at a temperature of not less than 22C. (72″F.). Clianthus ilampieri, the glory pea, requires special treatment and is very much a task for the experienced professional; having weak roots it must be grafted on to seedling stock of Colutea arborescens.

Besides the dwarf C. mitts there are many other members of the citrus family that one can experiment with, but it should be borne in mind that these may take up to ten years to produce fruits, whereas C. mitts will oblige in three to four years.

Iresine (Keniia belmoreana)

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Not particularly important plants, the iresines are interesting because of their foliage which is often a deep, blood-red colour. Given reasonable light and standard house plant treatment they are not difficult, and are better grown as fresh plants from cuttings each year - cuttings can be taken at almost any time. The heavier John lnnes type compost will be more suitable than the lighter compost advised for the majority of indoor plants.

These were popular plants at the turn of the century and have remained in the forefront as desirable indoor plants. Grown from seed sown in moist peat kept at a temperature in the region of 27 C. (80 F.), they take many years to reach maturity, so are expensive plants to purchase. For this reason they are not likely to become best sellers.

Cuttings of non-flowering shoots, or shoots that have had the flowers removed, may he rooted at almost any time; firm cuttings in peaty compost will present no problems if the standard propagating suggestions are followed. keep a watchful eve for red spider on the underside of leaves and treat accordingly.

Odor Free Compost Pails Are the Way to Go

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Composting forces someone to consider two issues — one’s horrible and the other is great. First the bad thing: composting can be smelly and tiresome. The good part, however, is that you have found a proactive way to go green. Why not take control of the situation and use an odor-free compost pail that hides away — where no one can see it — in your kitchen?

Why Bother to Compost?

I feel strongly about composting. After hearing a couple of friends talk about it, I read a few articles to become educated”or semi-educated, because theres so much to learn! My enthusiasm grew from realizing how vital it is for me to play a role in conservation. And you dont have to be a master gardener to compost your scraps. Even if you compost on a small scale, your contribution still matters. Over sixty percent of household waste is compostable, but Americans compost only about eight percent of their trash!

Don’t be Mean, Go Green!
