Good Gardeners Sawdust and Soil - Common Traits

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

east February

There is a tremendous amount of misinformation about house plants, landscaping and gardening. Much of it unfortunately, you will hear on the radio or TV and read in newspapers. This is especially true in connection with some of the advertisements of concerns that are more interested in money than in satisfied customers.

Remember the most reliable source you have of garden information is your county agricultural agent, who gets his information from the Agricultural Extension Service and the Agricultural Experiment Station of your own state university. They know your local conditions and plants adapted to your locality.

As new gardening experiments are carried out, even the professionals have to change their ideas and recommendations from time to time. Despite these changes, many people are still gardening as their grandparents did. We might take note in passing (just to start an argument), that so far scientists have never found any connection between signs of the moon and the proper time to plant, sow seed and harvest. The condition of the soil, temperature, and moisture are far more important.

Non-Blooming Large Blue Hydrangea

Question: Would you recommend a good mulch for azaleas and camellias one that will hold moisture, aid in aeration, promote growth and keep the soil acid? Texas.

A mixture of sawdust, or better still, shavings from the planing mill and rotted barnyard manure using about equal parts of each makes an ideal mulch for azaleas and camellias. For appearances a coating of peat moss might be put over this mulch to change it from an almost white color to a dark brown.

Question: Our land is heavy clay. What can I do, or what kind of soil could I mix with this clay to get better results from my gardening? Michigan.

Heavy clay soil is excellent soil but the soil particles are so small they tend to run together and make the ground very hard to work. To improve clay for gardening, first spade or till the ground in the late fall or early spring, as deep as possible. Leave it rough for a time so that freezing and thawing can break it down.

How To Choose an Excellent Railing System

Types Of Curved Railing

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

The use of a curved deck railing is very important on every deck. It is an art piece used to enhance the curve appeal of your deck, in case you are planning to build a curved one. Without it, your curved deck will not be as good looking as you would want it to appear. On top of that, it won’t look complete at all. So while you are still in the planning stage of your deck, including it in the design if you want a curved deck will be best. This way, you wont have to try injecting it into the lay out and making the trouble of redesigning the entire task.

Building a curved deck railing is a bit difficult, which is why it is not recommended for DIYs. But there are real inventive and skilled people who can actually do the job. There are prefabricated curved deck railings that you can acquire for the building plans. These are perfectly crafted to match standard sizes and shapes of a curved deck so you will need no more cuttings or modifications on both your deck and your acquired prefab deck railing.

What are Built-In Deck Benches?

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

There are many accessories you can put on your deck to make it appear better looking. But have you thought about how you can make it look larger and more functional that it really is? Deck benches are all you need then! These are just like your outdoor benches situated inside the porch. Building it is just so easy you can go about your usual DIY stunt. Put on your goggles and safety wears, pull out your tool box and hammer out!

One of the best ways of making a number of benches inside your porch or deck, especially with a very limited space, is by doing it built-in. Doing so will make your deck look spacey and real large than what it really is. This type of deck benches are really very necessary if you love entertaining right in the comfort of your home.

Building built-in benches is easy as you don’t need to really build the entire bench. You also have the deck for support so the figure of the bench is all that’s left for you to complete. This type of bench building is also so much inexpensive as the use of the deck where you build it in will become a decrease in the budget.

Things I Like About My Aunt’s Bamboo Compost Pail

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

She just bought a bamboo compost pail two weeks or so ago and I have to say, I am jealous. I always thought having a compost bucket in your kitchen was a surefire recipe for fruit flies, mold and a smelly house, but I had to take it all back when I viewed this thing.

She can put all the kitchen scraps generated by her family of five in there and she only has to take it out once per week or so. It looks absolutely beautiful, and best of all, it has redundant filters so there is absolutely no stench!

Not only does the bamboo look good in her kitchen (I didn’t even find out what it was until I complimented her on her new “ice cooler”) but the bamboo plant is a fast growing, easy to feed, non-resource intensive renewable resource. Unlike the majority of that take several decades to mature, bamboo for wood can be grown in just a season, making it one of the most ecological materials in existence today.

Lawn Sprinkler Systems = Beautiful Grass & Flowers All Summer Long

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Have you been dreaming of a perfect, lush, green lawn in your front and backyard? How about colorful blooming flowers in your new flowerbed? If you answered yes, it is time for a complete lawn sprinkler system to be installed in your yard. These low maintenance systems are simple and easy to use. Better yet, they offer homeowners the chance to have a beautiful yard without all the hard labor and time invested.

The best part of a sprinkler system is the fact that they are very convenient to use. No longer will you have to stand in the yard each day moving the hose from one area to another. Not only will it save you lots of time and might I go as far as to say heartache, but, in ground sprinkler systems are not ugly and bulky like portable sprinklers.

If you have ever been to Home Depot or Lowes, you have probably seen their sprinkler design professionals. You can either speak to them to contact a sprinkler contractor to help you come up with an appropriate sprinkler design based on your yard layout, drainage needs, and other specifics that you have in mind. Most of these contractors and home and garden centers will also provide you with a complete sprinkler installation and maintenance service. This is what we like to refer to as the one stop lawn watering management solution.

Tuscany Lighting - Enlighten the Beauty of Your Home

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Tuscany lighting has soft qualities and it grants a gorgeous appearance to your home at dawn or dusk. You can use it in the morning muted. You can have Tuscany candle holders at night to enhance the joyous moments in the outdoor dinner parties. Tuscany decoration with light can help to set the romantic mood and you can plan for an enthusiastic garden party. It offers an inviting ambience and warm feeling to the guests.

You can add some other themes to enhance the Tuscany home decor. You can use the details of grapes, olives, scrolled ironwork, earthy tones like olive green and terracotta and Italian garden scenes. You can add textures like maple, tapestry or ceramic tile, which can increase the Tuscany feel.

You can put a Tuscany Motif to your rooms by including wrought iron lighting. The wrought iron chandelier hanging in the dining room or bedroom can provide a beautiful backdrop for all your parties and get together.

You can add Tuscany Outdoor lighting to your garden. Tuscany inspired candelabra is the most fascinating way to enhance the feel. You can include candles and can plan a fabulous outdoor meal. Black wrought iron can offer that elegant appearance.

How to avoid toxic flowers

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

As I mentioned in my previous article, children under age 5 are the usual victims of plant poisoning owing to their curious nature. At this age, it is hard to resist the allure of bright-colored and sweet-smelling flowers even if some of them are poisonous.

“Lots of plants are poisonous or capable of causing highly allergic reactions. Some will also pierce you with their sharp spines. Few actually do lasting harm but some should be treated with care and respect,” according to doctors at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Australia.

“Many plants have poisonous bulbs or roots but as these are usually safely underground, they are not likely to poison anyone. Others taste so awful that it is difficult to eat enough to cause a serious injury. Oleander, for example tastes so bitter and unpalatable that it is difficult to accidentally eat very many of the leaves. On the other hand there are plants that look appealing but contact can have bad results,” they added.

However, protecting our kids is easier said than done since it can be difficult to recognize a poisonous plant. Often there are no telltale signs or characteristics that distinguish a poisonous plant from one that isn’t. Therefore, we have to educate ourselves to save our children.

Laura Ashley’s timeless fabric design has found a new home in the garden. This elegant classic look has combined with traditional hardwood such as teak to create quality garden furniture which has panache and style.

In the Laura Ashley Garden Furniture range, the Sandbanks Deckchair is one of these quality products which exude style. Manufactured to a very high standard from a durable hardwood, this Edwardian style deckchair has some modern twists on this classic design.

The problem with deckchairs, altering the position, has been made simple and efficient with a foot operated click lock mechanism. With this innovation, you can enjoy any of the 3 positions without difficulty. Deckchairs are no longer something to be approached with trepidation!

The deckchair also comes with an adjustable sunshade which can be moved vertically to protect the skin from sun damage. The canopy mirrors the seatpad in terms of fabric design with the delightful Laura Ashley “Lloyd” fabric and its reverse, “Biscuit”, perfectly complimenting each other.

The footrest is another elegant feature which exudes class. It is removable and has a folding leg to allow easy use.
